Vol. 22 — When Agents Manage Humans
Ok, so this might be a tad controversial..
A new paper from DeepFlow on human–AI collaboration explores the concept of the Manager Agent—an autonomous system designed to coordinate workflows between humans and machines. Rather than assigning tasks to agents under human direction, the agent itself allocates roles, schedules interactions, and balances work between people and AI.
This represents a structural inversion, one that will likely be met with a lot of resistance. To date, human–AI collaboration has been designed with human supervision, people setting the agenda and directing the machine; the Manager Agent model describes a shift where orchestration itself becomes an automated function, with humans integrated as contributors inside an agent-managed process.
The implications extend beyond software architecture, requiring role definitions within organizations to change and, consequently, giving rise to several key challenges:

Work described as “oversight” or “control” risks fragmentation when orchestration is handled algorithmically.

Employees become specialized participants inside machine-curated workflows rather than central coordinators.

Governance becomes more complex, since responsibility for sequencing and delegation is no longer located in a single human role.
Enterprise adoption would depend on cultural readiness as much as technical design, and practices of team management, accountability, and workflow trust would need to adapt.
It’s worth noting that the concept of Manager Agent is not a new abstraction. Similar dynamics already appear in Logistics, where algorithmic scheduling, automated resource allocation, and orchestration platforms reduce managerial discretion.
Formalizing this pattern in agentic AI makes the trade-offs explicit: efficiency and scalability increase, but the meaning of management itself changes.
Without question, org design would have to account for this inversion. Oversight mechanisms, accountability frameworks, and cultural norms would need to evolve to absorb a future where orchestration is automated, and human roles are repositioned within agent-managed systems.
I suppose the real question is how much resistance will this concept encounter? Will it ultimately become the operating norm or be too disruptive to be implementable?
